So here is my latest activity to have students explore artworks. I display an artwork on the Smart Board and they get a post-it. After observing the work for several minutes they speculate what the Big Idea is. This may be as simple as the subject for younger students or theories about meaning for older students. It is a quick snapshot of their overall thinking and observation skills. After they stick their post-it to the light bulb we discuss the results for a few minutes. These discussions always link to the project at hand.</div>

</div>
I found this cute scarecrow on Pinterest (For the Fun of Art Blog) and thought it was cute, but it needed a few more of my curriculum objectives. So, along with my student teacher we created a 6 station rotation to create parts of the scarecrow with a variety of materials and textures. We started by reading The Little Scarecrow Boy by Margret Wise Brown.<br />
<br />
Since I now have a Smart board, we created mini videos to explain each station. I wanted to post them, but I have been having lots of problems getting them to fully load. So here are the basics...<br />
Station 1- Moon print- make a circle stencil with tag board and use white paint and sponges to fill it in.<br />
Station 2- Hat print- print the edge of a piece of matt board in vertical and horizontal patterns in yellow paint over brown paper.<br />
Station 3- Curled paper hands and folded hair (for time we took out folding the hair)- cut and curl/fold 2 rectangles of butterscotch paper.<br />
Station 4- Crumple head- trace and cut out a circle of brown bag paper and crumple.<br />
Station 5- Crayon rubbed sleeves- crayon rubbings over texture plates on 2 white rectangles<br />
Station 6- Fabric patches- cut 3-4 fabric shapes<br />
<br />
For the next class we read The Scarecrow's Hat by Ken Brown, then assembled the sleeves, head and hat. We focused a lot of proper use of glue and scissors.<br />

For the last class, made the hat, assembled the parts and added details. The final step was making the crow for his head. They turned out great!H. I saw a great picture on Pinterest which inspired me to try something this week with my second grade classes. It worked amazingly well. We learned about the concept of value. We talked about how colors can have lighter and darker versions. I asked them what one item everyone in the room had that was the same color, but each of us had a different value of. Within a few guesses, someone always says, "Our Skin." So we made a human value scale. I had the kids do all of the problem solving themselves, trying to line up the class from dark to light. We used their arms as the location to compare. It was great seeing them test arms and them decide whether each person was in the right place of needed to move left of right to be in value order. When it was all in order I photographed each class. Since the students took ownership of creating the scale and since they can remember this activity just by looking at their arms, they have retained the information so much better than activities I have done in the past.<br />

But I wanted to post a few picks so everyone could see my vision. With the new common core we are trying to incorporate a lot more literacy, so I have a fair amount of vocabulary around the room, with lots more at the laminator on the way.<br />
<br />
I themed my room for the book, The Dot. So I have dots on the walls, for curtains and table signs. I used dots on the front boards (wrapping paper). The table signs are the dots "framed in swirly gold" frames. All of my chairs have colored electrical tape spirals on them, 4 colors per table. These help me to select helpers during class, and a happy bonus, they don't come off or get picked at by little fingers.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decide to keep my desk this year in the storage room to give me more space to move around. Especially, since I have a SMARTBoard!!! I am using the row of milk crates under the board as step stools for the smaller folks to reach the top of the board. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The valance over the window are paper covered cardboard pizza rounds from our local Imo's Pizza. Parents can be a great source of materials, especially recycled items. The lamp are IKEA, they are a great light source when I shut down the overheads for working at the SMARTBoard.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The back my room had a full wall bulletin board, until they turned the room into a 4th grade. Then they put a coat rack in the middle of my board. So to disguise it and stop head injuries from students running into it, I made a faux shelf from pink construction foam and covered it in butcher paper. It is light weight, cheap and looks good. The green tape seen on the floor is tape I get from the PE teacher for marking floors. I use it to set up no go areas for students. In this case we create a "pond" around the demo table, to stop crowding around the table. This inevitably ends up as a shoving match and students shaking my table. I create a line they cannot pass, which spreads them out and keeps them off my table.</div>

So a few of the things I want to tell you about in the weeks to come are...<br />
-my new classroom<br />
-my new ideas about teaching activities to enhance the art experience<br />
-fun project I have tried<br />
I really need to do this, this year as a cathartic was to express my ideas, whether anyone likes them or agrees with them. I think if I can get some of them out of my head and on the page, I may be able to focus better on the best ones.<br />
<br />
So as my first pic of the year I wanted to post one of my 1st grade projects from last May. This totally describes the feeling about my day, AAARRRGGGGHHHH!<br />

They could have done some really cool things with a little more time. The idea was to create a 3D version of American Gothic with a twist. The twist is they are the designer and a new client has come to you. The task is the client has purchased the small home featured in the American Gothic painting near Stone City, Iowa and they want it remodelled to better match their taste. Students had to decide, who the client was, what their style would be and who would stand with them in front of the house. We used a basic pop up card design to get the basic house and then used marker and paper construction techniques to remodel the house. Students were required to build at least one 3D item from paper. Finally they had to pose the client and one other character with them, holding something, similar to the American Gothic characters in front of the home. Some are quite clever and others are just cute.<br />

This year I have made almost $1800! I have tried to pick dynamic projects that not only fit my curriculum, but are big sellers for parents. I was talked into the presentation by a wonderful professor at UMSL. So what was the presentation about, well art on a cart, of course. I shared all of my tips and tricks for making art on cart successful. My philosophy... master the cart so it doesn't master you. In other words get organized, plan for pitfalls and get control of the situation or else the cart will drag you down and leave tracks on your back. I really enjoyed the presentation, talked to some very nice teachers, got a few new ideas myself and hopefully inspired someone else to try a new technique to make their cart experience more pleasant. If you would like to see my presentation just follow this link: <a href="http://prezi.com/qsnvkqeozo-n/mastering-art-on-a-cart/">http://prezi.com/qsnvkqeozo-n/mastering-art-on-a-cart/</a><br />
<br />
On another note, I was recently elected (uncontested) as the District 8 representative on the MAEA Council. I attended my first meeting this week and ran my first district meeting today. Hopefully the deer in the headlights look I walk around with most of the day didn't leave the wrong impression with my fellow council members. This looks to be an exciting venture with lots of rewards and plenty of work. Once I gain my bearings, I hope to do some fun things with my fellow District 8 art teachers! More to come later...H. Next time I would make the coils thicker to avoid so much breakage. Those that are about the thickness of an index finger were the best. We used Picasso as inspiration and emhasized organic shapes. I like them unpainted, but you could probably add color if you wanted. Here they are displayed on top of the original sketches. <div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kuw8LCRUSLo/TzCTqijqqrI/AAAAAAAAASw/nXWOJ0GtoUY/s1600/April+20+2011+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" sda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kuw8LCRUSLo/TzCTqijqqrI/AAAAAAAAASw/nXWOJ0GtoUY/s320/April+20+2011+003.JPG" width="213" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4wbP-yjRMSI/TzCUBDhqeZI/AAAAAAAAATA/rG3Jp65X83A/s1600/April+20+2011+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" sda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4wbP-yjRMSI/TzCUBDhqeZI/AAAAAAAAATA/rG3Jp65X83A/s320/April+20+2011+005.JPG" width="213" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bQgaDSXHkXg/TzCUMo92PBI/AAAAAAAAATI/m49SHB3e5_s/s1600/April+20+2011+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" sda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bQgaDSXHkXg/TzCUMo92PBI/AAAAAAAAATI/m49SHB3e5_s/s320/April+20+2011+006.JPG" width="213" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Eg8XOJBcB2c/TzCTfEBT0hI/AAAAAAAAASo/fSZBKcgoJq8/s1600/April+20+2011+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" sda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Eg8XOJBcB2c/TzCTfEBT0hI/AAAAAAAAASo/fSZBKcgoJq8/s320/April+20+2011+002.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BYUIfKUD2Cs/TzCTSy-WmLI/AAAAAAAAASg/auAXOmpBrOk/s1600/April+20+2011+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" sda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BYUIfKUD2Cs/TzCTSy-WmLI/AAAAAAAAASg/auAXOmpBrOk/s320/April+20+2011+001.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>H. We only get this opportunity once every other year. So I brought some of my best work to show.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is Mouse Paint by Kindergarten, I have about 4 versions of this and do it differently each year.<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TeGViwFmS4k/Tw0LiCsQFtI/AAAAAAAAARw/aew0rmuER5A/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TeGViwFmS4k/Tw0LiCsQFtI/AAAAAAAAARw/aew0rmuER5A/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B014.JPG" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love these collage snowmen with radial symmetry snowflakes by Kindergarten.<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8nJFyhHSLeI/Tw0LxGM76uI/AAAAAAAAAR8/EZMyNOeQ7s8/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8nJFyhHSLeI/Tw0LxGM76uI/AAAAAAAAAR8/EZMyNOeQ7s8/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B015.JPG" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This Mondrian inspired artwork was inspired by one of my fellow teachers, Andy Rohde. Kindergartener's loved making the faces.<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aEQEJC96mnU/Tw0KALvQOoI/AAAAAAAAARA/yvSX6nPL_UI/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aEQEJC96mnU/Tw0KALvQOoI/AAAAAAAAARA/yvSX6nPL_UI/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These 1st grade snowmen are actually relief sculptures. The shadows are cool colored chalk.<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZHcogwBKmzE/Tw0K9uB2usI/AAAAAAAAARY/ytne_w9kUOA/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZHcogwBKmzE/Tw0K9uB2usI/AAAAAAAAARY/ytne_w9kUOA/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B012.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My first graders printed these robots with mat board scraps and tissue tubes, then colored them in with metalic crayon.<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4W46Oyj_Cw4/Tw0JZldoueI/AAAAAAAAAQo/g5YqY5AUFeg/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4W46Oyj_Cw4/Tw0JZldoueI/AAAAAAAAAQo/g5YqY5AUFeg/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B008.JPG" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My second graders made these great Scream pics with oil pastel and model magic for the screaming guy.<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mhvnWZtFY1g/Tw0Jsx-zZDI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/Tew15s60nvM/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mhvnWZtFY1g/Tw0Jsx-zZDI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/Tew15s60nvM/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--RnV_ePgiQs/Tw0GMrJKQBI/AAAAAAAAAO8/Gh090JPSKUw/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--RnV_ePgiQs/Tw0GMrJKQBI/AAAAAAAAAO8/Gh090JPSKUw/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3rd grade created these porthole pics with oil pastel and tempra. These used techniques for creating space. <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XCbFhw3iS4A/Tw0Gfq0tPtI/AAAAAAAAAPI/h8Z2fucuz40/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XCbFhw3iS4A/Tw0Gfq0tPtI/AAAAAAAAAPI/h8Z2fucuz40/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B004.JPG" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Dst1o72RBgY/Tw0G0bpqFNI/AAAAAAAAAPU/1pu2W9beJwo/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Dst1o72RBgY/Tw0G0bpqFNI/AAAAAAAAAPU/1pu2W9beJwo/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B005.JPG" width="214" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was a quick 3rd grade filler. We printed asymmetrical tree with mat board and added the thumbprint owl. The whole lesson helped students understand how artists works as illustrators, having to think obout where text will fit with their pictures. We used the Robert Frost poem, <u>Stopping by the Woods on Snowy Evening.</u><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ho9oihBRbQE/Tw0HId7mB6I/AAAAAAAAAPg/-Jvk6UjKR-A/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ho9oihBRbQE/Tw0HId7mB6I/AAAAAAAAAPg/-Jvk6UjKR-A/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These 4th grade masks inspired by Native American masks, cover up some fabulous student self portraits.<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nPEMdujPVhM/Tw0HcRTYZxI/AAAAAAAAAPs/rTcCUhoeCZY/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nPEMdujPVhM/Tw0HcRTYZxI/AAAAAAAAAPs/rTcCUhoeCZY/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B017.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These other 4th grade projects are sandwiches made in relief with paper and center of interest snowmen done quilt style.<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vzCz9bdl6_w/Tw0HtBq1LSI/AAAAAAAAAP4/T9V57-fKx4A/s1600/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vzCz9bdl6_w/Tw0HtBq1LSI/AAAAAAAAAP4/T9V57-fKx4A/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="214" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3UT_n8awx-k/Tw0QlvR7-ZI/AAAAAAAAASU/GNY9X1gtWG4/s320/central%2Boffice%2Bshow%2B2012%2B009.JPG" width="320" />My 5th grade has really knocked it out of the park this year. These pop out chairs in a room are inspired by Van Gogh's paintings of his room and the Renaissance artists. They learned about basic 1 pt. perspective and really got it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

These are done with several layers of oil pastel smeared with baby oil. Some are amazing, unfortunately they don't photograph as well as they look in person. <br />

My third graders were introduced to several new concepts with this 3 week project.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Week One- Learn about tints and shades. Then students painted a large blue oval on the paper. They mixed white with the blue and painted inside the circle, each ring gets progressively lighter until you get to the center. Next add black to the blue and paint rings on the outside of the circle. Each ring getting darker until you hit the outside.</div><br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Week Two- Learn about 5 ways to create depth. Students did a warm up drawing worksheet where they practiced creating space by... </div>1)overlapping<br />
2)placement on the page <br />
3)size<br />
4)amount of detail <br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oiBp-l2shGI/TuleiycSSuI/AAAAAAAAANQ/Q9uaIbfqJAA/s1600/nov+23+2011+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" oda="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oiBp-l2shGI/TuleiycSSuI/AAAAAAAAANQ/Q9uaIbfqJAA/s320/nov+23+2011+004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">5)boldness/paleness of color</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DhrR4DKyq3A/TulfTbmQugI/AAAAAAAAANY/SpIwhhP9HtU/s1600/nov+23+2011+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" oda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DhrR4DKyq3A/TulfTbmQugI/AAAAAAAAANY/SpIwhhP9HtU/s320/nov+23+2011+003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2WIvF7RKd58/Tuldli0_1uI/AAAAAAAAAMw/98uabjlvjFc/s1600/nov+23+2011+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" oda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2WIvF7RKd58/Tuldli0_1uI/AAAAAAAAAMw/98uabjlvjFc/s320/nov+23+2011+002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div>Next we watched a video about jelly fish on Discovery Streaming and learned about what they look like and how they move. Students drew jellyfish on their paper in white oil pastel using as many techniques for creating depth as they could.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Week Three- Watch another video on Discovery Streaming this time about coral reefs. Have students continue to create depth, by using the 5 techniques, but this time add fish and coral to complete the picture. Cut out the most interesting part of the picture and assemble into a porthole window. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RB49QC4nV5E/TulhCYdkK1I/AAAAAAAAANw/Y9GT0P55O0g/s1600/Dec+1+007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" oda="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RB49QC4nV5E/TulhCYdkK1I/AAAAAAAAANw/Y9GT0P55O0g/s320/Dec+1+007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tZVzX8AyZFk/TulgvHqx5GI/AAAAAAAAANo/QnxCwU4mU4U/s1600/Dec+1+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" oda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tZVzX8AyZFk/TulgvHqx5GI/AAAAAAAAANo/QnxCwU4mU4U/s320/Dec+1+006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>H. This has been a fabulous experience and given me a chance to present at their teacher workshops twice now. After the most recent workshop I am feeling much more confident in my presenting skills and I am hoping to present at MAEA in the spring. <br />
<br />
So the presentation was based on the Monet's Waterlillies Exhibition currently at the St. Louis Art Museum. I presented a lesson plan based on the idea that you can connect the idea of hybridization of plants and art. I talked about Mendel and his pea plants. How he isolated 5 specific characteristics of the plants to try and make offspring with specifically desired traits.<br />
<br />
My final lesson included these 3D flowers...<br />

If you have a cart great or check to see if there is an extra AV cart in the library or I have even used a wagon (like a Radio Flyer, I like the one made <span style="background-color: yellow;">for</span> off-roading with fat air filled tires). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f2i5DBGFPoI/TrnZqK1bvhI/AAAAAAAAAJs/cV_UJJ60Jxs/s1600/Oct+2011+067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" ida="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f2i5DBGFPoI/TrnZqK1bvhI/AAAAAAAAAJs/cV_UJJ60Jxs/s320/Oct+2011+067.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I use liquid watercolors, but the procedures would be the same with pan watercolors. I try to prep 8 sets of everything I use, this seems to be enough for any of the classrooms I go to. I carry 2, five gallon buckets with me, one for clean water and one for dirty. I fill the clean about 1/3 of the way. I also have half sheets of poster board I use for place mats. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div>When we paint I have students pick up supplies cafeteria style from my cart or an available table. They get their paper, paint shirt, place mat, and brush. I pass out water cups and paint when everyone is settled, this avoids spills. if it is a rather messy group, or a teacher has complained about messes, I keep the paint and water cups in an old cookie sheet, a paper box lid, pop can trays or a shoe box lid to contain spills and drips. Once paint is out they have to raise hands to get supplies, this limits movement in tight spaces. I make sure to have paper towels cut in quarters available for minor wipe ups. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">When we are done painting, place mats and paintings go on the drying rack. I collect paint and water cups with paint brushes in them. The dirty water goes in the dirty bucket and I rinse the brushes in some fresh water or leave them in fresh water to clean later, depending on how dirty they are, or if I have another class painting that day. I put a little clean water in each cup, swirl around and dump in the dirty before stacking them. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">While I take care of brushes and cups, students put away all other supplies and wipe desks with baby wipes or damp paper towels. I start training them with this in Kndg, and they are pretty self sufficient by the 1st grade. If it is a messy hand type of day, I give them either wipes to clean hands or we go to the bathroom for a 30 second wash (our bathrooms have 8 sinks).</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">My goals are... easy to store, fast/easy to clean up and compact. This isn't the same system I use when I have a classroom. Then I try to have students take more ownership and be responsible for most set up and tear down. </div>H. So here are the photos of some of my September artwork. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">These are 1st grade number drawing based on The Figure Number Five by Charles Demuth. I used it as a way to get started with procedures for the year and review crayon use.<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B3hZl9o7Qjs/To5VOXD_r6I/AAAAAAAAACw/e_QLyqF9ksQ/s1600/sept+11+029.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" kca="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B3hZl9o7Qjs/To5VOXD_r6I/AAAAAAAAACw/e_QLyqF9ksQ/s320/sept+11+029.JPG" width="213" /></a></div> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yj2MDUSWCgg/To5Varr3-lI/AAAAAAAAAC0/8XEfAmLoGNQ/s1600/sept+11+030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yj2MDUSWCgg/To5Varr3-lI/AAAAAAAAAC0/8XEfAmLoGNQ/s320/sept+11+030.JPG" width="213" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cHmCY5mCDoo/To5Z8Yqm7uI/AAAAAAAAADo/5XhNEYVrG20/s1600/sept+art+021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" kca="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cHmCY5mCDoo/To5Z8Yqm7uI/AAAAAAAAADo/5XhNEYVrG20/s320/sept+art+021.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
This was borrowed from a blog (sorry can't remember which) But they were complex pattern kimonos with second grade. <br />
<br />

These are 4th grade abstraction of a hand using values in 2 colors only using crayon.<br />
<br />

<br />
These were third graders working with overlapping and review of material use.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EayeehP0hFo/To5WYAYKnYI/AAAAAAAAADI/ArIEiCcLD_0/s1600/sept+11+034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" kca="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EayeehP0hFo/To5WYAYKnYI/AAAAAAAAADI/ArIEiCcLD_0/s200/sept+11+034.JPG" width="200" /></a></div> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V9r-FxyjgjU/To5WkrChbbI/AAAAAAAAADM/kZSLJW-WTPk/s1600/sept+11+035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V9r-FxyjgjU/To5WkrChbbI/AAAAAAAAADM/kZSLJW-WTPk/s200/sept+11+035.JPG" width="200" /></a><br />
<br />
Again, I borrowed this and can't remember from where. But I really like how they came out! Still life of a bike with and analogous glow. These are by second grade.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GoyR0pAVz0s/To5WwF-zL_I/AAAAAAAAADQ/uXiZnkBfQzo/s1600/artsonia+006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" kca="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GoyR0pAVz0s/To5WwF-zL_I/AAAAAAAAADQ/uXiZnkBfQzo/s320/artsonia+006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This project kind of bombed, but I show it anyway. Started out great, bug pics made symmetrical by drawing only half and mono printing to the other side. That's where it went down hill. Probably should have waited a little further into the year, lots of not following directions led to unidentifiable blobs. These are the more successful ones. The biggest mistake was when I had other classes cut them out to mount on new paper. Now I have piles of blob scraps, EEEKKKK!</div><br />

We talked about Georges Seurat and spent a large amount of time talking about how to use paint properly. The lesson was less about art and more about material control. I talked about why we wear paint shirts, where the paint belongs and what happens if paint gets in the wrong place. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Another very successful art experience for Kindergarten.</div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Our next adventure was in figuring out what happens when a dot moves. I gave each student a 5mm slice of crayon and had then push it around a paper. We talked about what the mark it made was called, line. I read several books on lines to students and we even went outside to move in different lines. I teacher them straight, curved, squiggly, bumpy, wavy, curly, zig-zag, broken, dotted, spiral and castle. After they learn the names and how to draw each one, we drew several on 12x18 paper. Next we drew in glue over each and sprinkled sand on top. This gave us a textural line like the book <u>Lines that Squiggle</u>. Students thought this was very cool. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
During the next class period we painted over the lines with tempera cake. This was again more of a lesson about materials use not art terms. I did point out that the style of art we were creating was non-objective, and therefore they didn't have to worry about what they were painting, just to focus on using the paint correctly.</div>

<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
Again the next logical step was to discover what happens when lines come together. So back outside we went with jump ropes to make shapes from straight and curved lines. Students worked in groups of 3 or 4 to make giant shapes. They had a lot of fun and it was great problem solving and cooperative learning for everyone.</div>

I read the book The Dot and we talk about how art can start with a simple dot. Each child then gets to make a dot of their own. When they are finished we glue it to a gold colored paper and use gold marker to make swirls. They frame it in "swirly gold" just like the art teacher in the story does. The best part is the hall display. The kids get so excited to see their dot on display. </div>

Each student will be tweeting in a more manual form about a variety of topics throughout the school year. This started with discussions about Vermeer and Vasquez portraiture. Students learned many of the tricks used to get proportion correct and the placement of facial features just right. We used mirrors to help students create more accurate portraits of themselves. The drawings were done in pencil and then lightly colored in with colored pencil. Next, we glued then onto paper to create a Twitter looking strip and added screen names. I will be laminating them over the next few weeks and then students can respond to my tweets with a dry erase marker. The tweets can then be posted for everyone to read. I think there are probably lots of ways to use these in the classroom, but I haven't thought of all the possible applications yet. I got the idea from a speaker I heard at the MSDC conference last year. Other ideas like this are available on his web site <a href="http://kevinhoneycutt.org/">http://kevinhoneycutt.org/</a> </div>

I really enjoy sharing and learning from the blogs of the many art teachers that I subscribe to. So, I have decided that it is time to share some of my projects, experiments and adventures in the art classroom with others.<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
This year the adventure began with me teaching on a cart for the first time in over 10 years. This has been less of a learning curve than the first time around, but advances in technology have certainly thrown in a new twist that I have been learning to work around. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
For now I thought I would post pictures of my cart. The district provided me with a basic cart with decent storage, but I couldn't just leave it at that. </div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JTP-up6ARTA/Tn09rBrTyaI/AAAAAAAAAAU/7b6GKGXDOvk/s1600/sept+11+019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="133" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JTP-up6ARTA/Tn09rBrTyaI/AAAAAAAAAAU/7b6GKGXDOvk/s200/sept+11+019.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
As you can see I went all out creating a super art a la cart machine! My husband helped me to "pimp my ride." I thought about all the needs I would have and tried to create solutions for each need.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FuZX0GNeRDk/Tn0947t5O9I/AAAAAAAAAAY/pN3wcVh4Tmk/s1600/sept+11+021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FuZX0GNeRDk/Tn0947t5O9I/AAAAAAAAAAY/pN3wcVh4Tmk/s200/sept+11+021.JPG" width="133" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lW5Wj1V2_O4/Tn0_AlgnbII/AAAAAAAAAAw/M84jmXIH5zE/s1600/sept+11+020.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lW5Wj1V2_O4/Tn0_AlgnbII/AAAAAAAAAAw/M84jmXIH5zE/s200/sept+11+020.JPG" width="133" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
The end has a fold down desk with a removable leg. It is great for using my document camera on for demonstrations. I also added an extra power strip for all of my computer equipment and a pencil sharpener.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CtDStmyRVw4/Tn0-E44OxWI/AAAAAAAAAAc/OuciiejX2BY/s1600/sept+11+013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CtDStmyRVw4/Tn0-E44OxWI/AAAAAAAAAAc/OuciiejX2BY/s320/sept+11+013.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The back side has accessible baskets of basic supplies like pencils, scissors and glue, with a lip to keep them from sliding off. You can see the pencil sharpener on the left. I can also clip posters to the lip for easy transport to each room. The large grey board is a dry erase on one side and bulletin board on the other. It has hooks at the top so it hangs on the lip. I can move it any where in the rooms I go to. Many have little or no white board space for me to use.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-33W1VTnVEGc/Tn0-Q3HeDXI/AAAAAAAAAAg/93RNnI9cV74/s1600/sept+11+014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-33W1VTnVEGc/Tn0-Q3HeDXI/AAAAAAAAAAg/93RNnI9cV74/s320/sept+11+014.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At the pushing end we drilled 2 holes and put in S hooks to hang 5 gallon buckets for clean and dirty water. Every inch gets used, so I have a dust pan and brush on the side of the shelf.</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P9ZZdO9-_G8/Tn0-dX1p9jI/AAAAAAAAAAk/eOZtPU63WvI/s1600/sept+11+015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P9ZZdO9-_G8/Tn0-dX1p9jI/AAAAAAAAAAk/eOZtPU63WvI/s200/sept+11+015.JPG" width="133" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fNv5c3xVwcE/Tn0-o6fXwII/AAAAAAAAAAo/lQ1fzY1HVYk/s1600/sept+11+016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fNv5c3xVwcE/Tn0-o6fXwII/AAAAAAAAAAo/lQ1fzY1HVYk/s200/sept+11+016.JPG" width="133" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lJHfTVBTlJQ/Tn0-0mAU0PI/AAAAAAAAAAs/hO_7McydQ7E/s1600/sept+11+018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hca="true" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lJHfTVBTlJQ/Tn0-0mAU0PI/AAAAAAAAAAs/hO_7McydQ7E/s200/sept+11+018.JPG" width="133" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
The teaching side includes lots of storage, a laptop with speakers, document camera, LCD projector and wireless Internet. I have recently changed the computer shelf to be legless, so I can have better access underneath. The document camera tucks in side to the right. The projector sits up top and is Velcro strapped to the cart. Pockets of information like emergency evacuation info and schedules are also on Velcro, so they can be easily removed. On the top are storage of my record books, extra free choice projects and books that I read to students.</div>
