Monet Projects

I am so thrilled with the results of my 5th grade Monet projects, based on the Agapanthus Tryptic on display at the St. Louis Art Museum until Jan 22nd.  These are done with several layers of oil pastel smeared with baby oil.  Some are amazing, unfortunately they don't photograph as well as they look in person.

  1. I have never tried the oil pastels and baby oil thing. How'd you do it?

  2. I had students fill the page with small one inch marks of whatever colors they wanted. They had to think about what objects, reflections and shadows might be in the picture to choose their colors. Then they use a little baby oil on a qtip to blend the colors together. if something doesn't come out they way they want they just draw over it and do it again. Some kids added 2 or 3 layers. Some added highlights and shadows. Then when they have the background the way they want add the lily pads. It's really just an experiment. The more oil pastel the better. They do not really dry though, so I am storing them betwteen wax paper.
